Illustrations. Business names are placeholders. Green tags show the signals that earned each recommendation.
SEO has changed more in the last two years than in the previous ten.
For years, SEO meant ranking on page one and competing for clicks. Now a growing share of searches end with an AI written answer that names just a handful of businesses. The customer gets a shortlist, not a list of links.
That changes what works. AI tools don't reward whoever repeats a keyword most or has the most backlinks. They recommend the businesses they can clearly understand, verify and quote. A lot of the SEO still being sold today was built for a version of search that's disappearing.
What no longer works
- Keyword stuffing: repeating the same phrase to hit a density target.
- Link volume for its own sake: hundreds of backlinks from sites nobody reads.
- A thin page for every variation: near identical pages targeting slightly different terms.
- Content written for word count: long articles that never actually answer the question.
- Rankings as the only KPI: position reports that ignore whether you're named in AI answers.
- Ignoring AI crawlers: sites that block GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot without realising.
What works now
- A clear, consistent identity: the same facts about who you are and what you do, everywhere online.
- Answer first content: pages that answer real customer questions directly, in a way AI can quote.
- Structured data: schema that tells machines exactly what your business offers and where.
- Mentions on trusted sites: reviews, directories, press and forums that AI tools draw on.
- Technical access: fast pages that AI crawlers can reach and read.
- Measuring AI visibility: tracking how often you're named, not just where you rank.
Four questions every AI tool asks about your business.
Before an AI tool recommends you, it needs a confident yes to each of these. My work is about making sure it gets one.

This builds on solid SEO rather than replacing it. The fundamentals still matter; they've just gained a new layer.

FAQs
Does AI search replace Google?
No. Google is still the biggest source of search traffic, and its own results now include AI Overviews and AI Mode. What's changed is that more people also ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity directly. Strong SEO feeds strong AI visibility, so the two work together.
Is GEO different from SEO?
GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. The fundamentals still matter: a fast, crawlable site, useful content and authority. GEO adds the work that helps AI tools understand your business, trust it and quote it in their answers.
Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No one honestly can. AI answers change from one question to the next. What I can do is remove the reasons AI tools skip you, strengthen the signals they rely on, and measure how often you're named before and after.
How long does it take to see results?
Technical fixes, such as unblocking AI crawlers or adding structured data, can make a difference within weeks. Building the authority and mentions that make AI tools confident about recommending you usually takes a few months.
How do you measure AI visibility?
I track a set of real questions your customers ask across the main AI tools and record whether you're named, how you're described and who's recommended instead. That gives you a clear baseline and progress you can see.
